Salmonella egg poisoning issue hits Michigan
NPR reported this morning that the enormous egg recall had been extended to include retail sales in Michigan, in addition to the dozen or so states previously implicated. USA Today reported that state and federal health agencies were aware of the salmonella problem, the outbreaks of illness and even of the identity of the egg company responsible, for at least two weeks prior to initiation of the recall.
Government authorities at the CDC considered reminding the public about the dangers of uncooked eggs but took no action while waiting for the FDA to complete its investigation. It has been reported that because of conflicting regulations, neither the FDA nor the Agriculture Department had inspected the plants from which the contaminated eggs originated.
