Newspaper reports Department of Justice is investigating Beaumont Health System and DMC
The Detroit Medical Center and Beaumont Health System have been notified by the U.S. Justice Department that they are being investigated for inappropriate defibrillator surgeries and implants. A spokesman for Vanguard Health System, the for-profit owner of the DMC, said that "many of our hospitals may have submitted claims for ICDs and related services that were excluded from coverage" and acknowledged that it is cooperating with the federal audit. Implantable defibrillators cost about $40,000.00 each and regulate irregular heart rhythms. If the implantation was unnecessary, as has been the case, apparently, with hundreds of previous DOJ investigations, the federal government can collect up to triple the cost it originally paid for the implant.
