The alleged fatalities are up to nine, and it is believed that more than 500 people have been made seriously ill. Contaminated products were apparently shipped with full knowledge that they were contaminated, and unsanitary conditions had prevailed in the company's factories for years. The factory in Texas that operated for four years without proper licensing or inspection has now been closed, in addition to the Georgia plant. All products produced at the Texas plant have now been recalled, also, after the plant's first inspection found contamination. The Houston Chronicle reported that Texas inspectors found dead rodents, rodent excrement, bird feathers and all manner of unsanitary conditions that could have resulted in product contamination.
