China exports infant formula tainted by chemical

For a number of months, a Chinese company has been exporting baby formula it know to be tainted by the chemical melamine used in manufacturing plastic.    This is the same chemical that led to the pet food recall in 2007:  it is used by unscrupulous suppliers to distort the amount of protein apparently available in foodstuffs.  Formula manufacturers in the U.S. are required to register with the FDA, and all claim that they have not used the Chinese supplier.   The Chinese Government alleged that the manufacturers in this case have known since March that their products were tainted, but did not report the problem.
