Bigger Toyota recall: turns out problem was not just floor mats

For years, Toyota has disputed claims that its vehicles were prone to sudden, uncontrolled acceleration.  Recently, it ordered a related recall (of 4.2 million vehicles), but it was only to address a problem with floor mats causing the accelerator to stick.  Yesterday, however, Toyota acknowledged a more serious serious safety issue and recalled 2.3 million vehicles to address mechanical problems that can cause the accelerator mechanism to stick.  The manufacturer acknowledges now that the problem can occur without any floor mats in the vehicle, and that it is related to wear in the accelerator mechanism.    The recall relates to 2009 and 2010 models, so it must not take too much wear to cause a failure.
